Kemin Human Nutrition and Health Names Dr. Mahendra Sonawane as Associate Director for Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance
Regulatory affairs professional brings years of experience at Kemin and in academic research to new role

DES MOINES, Iowa, U.S. (July 25, 2023) – Kemin Industries, a global ingredient manufacturer that strives to sustainably transform the quality of life every day for 80 percent of the world with its products and services, recently promoted Dr. Mahendra Sonawane to Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance for Kemin Human Nutrition and Health. Dr. Sonawane now leads a global team of regulatory and quality-assurance professionals and practices direct and indirect oversight over state, national and international product registrations/compliance and quality regulations for the global business unit.

As Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance, Dr. Sonawane will set the regulatory direction for new and existing products; explore new territories; and maintain strong relationships with regulatory agencies and trade organizations to ensure regulatory compliance of global sales into the nutraceutical market. Dr. Sonawane will also manage all quality assurance and food safety functions for the global business unit, ensuring that the quality of products is compliant with all relevant regulations and meets the highest standards of excellence.

Dr. Sonawane joined Kemin as part of the regulatory team for Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health – EMENA (Europe, Middle East, North Africa) in 2016. He was responsible for the European Food Safety Authority’s first positive opinion on the use chromium in the European Union (EU), which Kemin received for its KemTRACE® Chromium product. EU authorization of KemTRACE® Chromium is soon expected.

In 2021, Dr. Sonawane was put in charge of integrating Kemin Bio Solutions (which included the acquisition of Bio-Cide International) into the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) market. During his tenure in this role, Dr. Sonawane spearheaded business development in the region and played an instrumental role in driving market development and regulatory initiatives, as well as overseeing the localized production of biocidal products.

Dr. Sonawane earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at KU Leuven in Belgium, where he also conducted postdoctoral research in medicinal chemistry. He also completed a prestigious Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship in catalysis and total synthesis at Oxford University. In addition to his scientific training, Dr. Sonawane holds an Executive Master of Business Administration degree from Antwerp Management School in Belgium.
