Kemin Industries Recognizes Cornell University Researcher with Charlie Sniffen Award
The graduate student award recipient is conducting critical research on amino acid requirements of lactating dairy cattle

DES MOINES, Iowa (October 22, 2020) — Kemin Industries, a global ingredient manufacturer that strives to sustainably transform the quality of life every day for 80 percent of the world with its products and services, today awarded the 2020 Charlie Sniffen Graduate Student Award to Cornell University researcher Andrew LaPierre for his advanced work on amino acid requirements of lactating dairy cattle –  an area of critical importance to the dairy industry.

Andrew LaPierre, a Cornell University Ph.D. candidate, was selected as this year’s recipient of the $1,000 cash prize for his quality work that will directly influence dairy performance in the future. Amino acids, like lysine and methionine, are vital to ruminal nitrogen management, digestive balance and overall rumen functionality. In turn, that makes optimally balanced amino acids important to the overall productivity of lactating dairy cattle.

The selection committee considered experimental design, treatments, statistical methods and results in its decision.

“LaPierre’s work has created new understanding about the critically important role of amino acid nutrition in the performance of dairy cattle, an area of major emphasis for Kemin Industries,” said Daryl Schraad, President, Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health – North America. “His work exemplifies Dr. Sniffen’s leadership in conducting and communicating impactful research.”

Now in its fourth year, the Charlie Sniffen Graduate Student Award is a partnership between Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health – North America, Cornell University and William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute to honor the longtime dairy industry research leader. Throughout his career, including his time at Cornell University and as a scientific advisor to Kemin, Dr. Sniffen published more than 100 peer-reviewed industry journal articles, over 140 abstracts and more than 400 trade publication articles focused on dairy nutrition.

Hailing from Chazy, New York, LaPierre earned his Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and Master of Science in animal nutrition at the University of Illinois prior to beginning his Ph.D. work in ruminant nutrition in 2016.

LaPierre was presented the 2020 Charlie Sniffen Graduate Student Award by Dr. Sniffen and Kemin President and CEO Dr. Chris Nelson during the 82nd Annual Cornell Nutrition Conference.
