Kemin Receives Anvisa Approval for Immune-strengthening Dietary Supplement BetaVia(TM)

Brazil's Health Regulatory Agency approves product as novel ingredient

DES MOINES, Iowa, Dec. 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Kemin Industries, a global ingredient manufacturer that strives to sustainably transform the quality of life every day for 80 percent of the world with its products and services, announced today that its human nutrition and health product for immune support, BetaVia, has received approval as a novel ingredient in Brazil.

On November 9, the Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) of the Brazilian Ministry of Health published a resolution[1] authorizing BetaVia for use as a new food ingredient in the country. This authorization in Brazil follows a recent positive safety evaluation conducted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on BetaVia, as well as BetaVia's Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) self-affirmed status from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

"We are extremely excited to learn of Anvisa's approval of BetaVia, as Brazil is a key strategic market in terms of growth for the product and Kemin Human Nutrition and Health," said José Piccolotto, President, Kemin Human Nutrition and Health. "Brazil is one of many countries showing a desire to provide immune-enhancing ingredients in its functional food and beverages and dietary supplements, and our ingredients – including BetaVia – meet this need."

BetaVia is manufactured through a patented fermentation process using a proprietary strain of the algae Euglena gracilis. The finished product offers beneficial immunomodulatory effects that are supported by clinical and preclinical research.

A recently published clinical trial2 showed that participants who received a supplement containing BetaVia Complete for a 90-day period experienced the following immune-health benefits when compared to those participants who received a placebo:

  • 30 fewer upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) symptoms, which is 70% less than those receiving the placebo
  • 10 fewer URTI symptom days
  • 45% fewer URTI episodes
  • 3.3 fewer self-reported sick days
  • 80% lower global severity, which is the total severity of symptoms over time

"Kemin is focused on delivering high-quality, sustainable solutions to our customers, and we look forward to meeting the growing immune health needs within the Brazilian market," said Rosemeire Shiraishi, Sales Manager – Latin America, Kemin Human Nutrition and Health.
